Cased presentation medallion, the case should contain two
medallions but
one is missing, the bronze medallion bearing a coat of arms to the
obverse and the words Schola Dunelmensis,
no inscription to the reverse.
The case bearing the gold block inscription Presented to C W Patchell by
the Durham School Athletic Club.
Charles Watson Patchell was the son of Rev William
Gibson Patchell Vicar
of Tathwell near Louth,
attended the Derby School, Lincoln College
Oxford 1878 won the Pairs with J M Buxton, 1879 Rowed in the Coll Eight,
1^st Class in Classics (Moderations) 1880, President Lincoln College
Boating Club 1881, BA 1882, MA 1892 Trinity College Glenalmond
Perth.
Assistant Master at the Durham School 1884-91. And it is presumably
around his leaving that this medal was presented.
From 1892-1923 he was a master at Trinity College Glenalmond.
Volume 2 Number 4 of the Scottish Mountaineering Club Journal of 1893
lists C W Patchell as a new member. There is a photo
and article of him
on a Norwegian web site regarding his mountaineering interest and later
time in Norway.
